A pink variety of quartz, chemically silicon dioxide (SiO₂).
Mined mainly in Brazil, Madagascar, and South Africa.
Carved into love talismans since Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
Rose quartz is the pink variety of quartz, a silicon dioxide mineral (SiO₂) that crystallises deep in pegmatites and forms the translucent, blush-toned masses we cut and tumble today. Most of the world’s supply comes from Brazil, Madagascar, and South Africa, with smaller deposits in India and Namibia. Its soft pink is still debated by mineralogists — older theories credited trace titanium, iron, or manganese, while more recent studies point to microscopic pink fibres of a dumortierite-like mineral suspended through the quartz. The result is a stone that reads less as a sharp pink and more as a diffused, cloudy rose.
Humans have loved this stone for a long time. Rose quartz beads dating back to roughly 7000 BCE have been found in what is now Iraq, and the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all carved it into beads, seals, and small faces. Across those cultures it was linked to goddesses of love and beauty — Isis, Aphrodite, Venus — and often worn as a talisman for youthful skin and open-hearted affection.
Traditionally associated with self-love, compassion, and emotional softness, rose quartz is the stone people reach for when they want to feel a little gentler with themselves. It’s often worn for heart-opening, forgiveness, and quiet reassurance rather than for anything loud or fast. Think of it less as a fix and more as a reminder — to soften the shoulders, to speak to yourself the way you’d speak to someone you love.
Layers beautifully with clear quartz for amplification, rhodonite for deeper emotional healing, and howlite for a calmer, more settled finish.
Rose quartz sits around 7 on the Mohs scale — harder than howlite, but its pink can fade under prolonged direct sunlight, so store it out of strong light. Avoid perfumes, lotions, and harsh cleaners; rinse gently with lukewarm water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. In Singapore’s humidity, a quick wipe after wear keeps the surface clear and the silver findings bright.
